A Rixford man is facing criminal charges for allegations he punched a pregnant woman in the stomach.
Edward G. Varner, 26, of 1733 Looker Mountain Trail, was arraigned Monday before District Judge Dominic Cercone on charges of simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor; DUI-general impairment and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors; and summary counts of harassment and driving without a license.
According to the criminal complaint, at 1:17 a.m. May 1, Bradford City Police were dispatched to a residence for a report of an assault. On scene, police learned that Varner had been staying with a female and her boyfriend at their Bradford City residence, and he allegedly showed up late and woke up the children.
Varner and the boyfriend got into an argument, and it turned physical and ended up outside. The female, who is seven months pregnant, tried to get between the two males, and Varner shoved her into a vehicle and punched her in the stomach several times, the complaint alleged.
Varner got into his vehicle and drove away, and police found him at Sheetz. The officer determined that Varner had an odor of alcohol coming from him, as well as bloodshot, glassy eyes, so he administered standard field sobriety tests and arrested Varner for suspicion of DUI-alcohol, according to court records. Varner refused a blood draw.
The complaint further alleges that Varner possessed a marijuana pipe and THC wax.
Varner was released on $500 unsecured bail, and a preliminary hearing is set for June 2.
