GALETON — A five-run fourth inning aided Cam Austin’s six-plus inning pitching performance, as the Bradford baseball team beat Galeton, 6-5, on Monday.
Austin struck out five batters while allowing three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. Galeton plated three runs on Austin in the bottom of the third before the Owls picked the right-hander up a half-inning later.
“(Austin) gave us a great outing again and the pitch count caught up to him,” Bradford coach Eric Haynoski said.
When Austin reached the state-mandated 100-pitch threshold with one out and two runners on in the seventh, Haynoski brought on Calvin Minich to close the game.
Minich struck out the first batter he faced, then forced Patrick Lehman, who had hit a three-run home run earlier in the game, to ground out.
Ashton Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Owls.
“(Smith) is seeing the ball really well this year and he came in and got a big hit for us, which helped spark our five-run inning,” Haynoski said.
Jack Wells added a two-run double later in that inning.
“(Wells) came through with a big two-strike double,” Haynoski said. “It was nice to see him driving the ball like he was doing earlier in the year.”
Bradford’s win snapped a six-game losing streak, as the Owls improved to 5-10.

ELDRED — Four days ago, Otto-Eldred (8-4) lost to Coudersport (10-2) after falling victim to a six-run inning.
The Terrors avenged that loss on Monday with an eight-run first inning, however, capitalizing on Coudy mistakes to sprint past the Falcons.
“It was great for us to rebound after losing to them 6-5 on Friday,” O-E coach Lance Baker said.
Three walks, two hits, two errors and a hit by pitch fueled O-E’s big inning. Ryan Love and Cole Sebastian each drew a walk to start the rally before Jake Merry reached base on an infield error, starting the merry-go-round on the basepaths for the Terrors.
T.J. VanScoter and Andrew Schenfield each had RBI singles in the first. The duo then combined to extend O-E’s lead in the second with an RBI single from VanScoter and an RBI double by Schenfield.
Merry’s three-run home run in the third inning started a four-run spot for the Terrors and put the game out of reach.
VanScoter finished with three hits and two runs batted in, while Brendan Magee went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Josh Rhinehart added two hits and two RBI for O-E.
Garrett Kellert went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Coudy.
With two games remaining on its schedule, O-E can clinch a share of the Northern Allegheny League title with wins over Oswayo Valley and Cameron County.
