The Leadership McKean Class of 2020 experienced a 9-month CORE program like no other previous class.
In previous years, the Leadership McKean class was divided into 4-5 teams in order to complete team projects as part of their professional development. With COVID restrictions in place, team projects became more challenging. For this reason, class participants were provided the opportunity to choose to either complete a team project or identify and interview non-profits of their choice.
The interview process also provided the opportunity for the non-profit to identify needs that they have that could be future, prospective projects for future Leadership McKean classes. The Leadership McKean board wanted to recognize that many of the vital non-profits have been impacted by COVID and, perhaps, provide additional assistance through the upcoming Leadership McKean class projects.
Zoom provided the backdrop on Tuesday night for class participants to present the project portion of the Leadership McKean Core Program. Devon Baumgardner, Angelique Gobin, Caleb Landmesser, and Courtney Lynn Mealy presented their ‘Hike for Health’ project. Their human services-focused project was developed with a mission to promote both physical and mental health and well-being. A website (www.hikeforhealth.weebly.com) was developed that advocates for trail conservation while providing useful and detailed information on trails throughout McKean County. The team wanted to combat health challenges, like the high rate of obesity in our area, by connecting residents with the opportunity our area has for great hiking experiences. The team outlined support from the community, partners involved, needed funding to continue promoting trail systems, etc. They recognized the work of and the need to partner with key community partners, including the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and trail associations.
Regarding her 2020 Leadership McKean experience, participant Courtney Mealy said, “Looking at this project, I realize I am a leader and have the ability and strength to apply that leadership. Since being involved in Leadership McKean, I have joined the Elf Fund and RISE. This project has empowered me to step forward as a leader.”
With sponsorship from Northwest Bank, graduation for the Leadership McKean Class of 2020 was celebrated Thursday at the Pennhills Club.
