WORKING MOMS: In order to help ease the burden on mothers in the workforce, WalletHub compared the attractiveness of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia for a working mother based on 17 key metrics. The data set ranges from the median women’s salary to the female unemployment rate to day-care quality.
For working moms in Pennsylvania, the state is rated 11th for median women’s salary (adjusted for the cost of living) and 14th for average length of a woman’s work week (in hours).
However, the state is 49th in pediatricians per capita, 42nd when considering the gender pay gap and also 42nd for female unemployment rate. Meanwhile, the state is 30th when considering the percentage of single-mother families living in poverty.
Other areas considered were day-care quality (PA is 21st); child-care cost (36th); ratio of female to male executives (29th) and parental leave policy score (27th).

ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS ANNIVERSARY: On May 18, the anniversary of the signing of the Environmental Rights Amendment, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation and WITF/State Impact Pennsylvania invite residents to view a special screening of documentary clips featuring the history of the passage of the amendment.
Following the screening, a panel discussion gives viewers the chance to learn more about why and how the amendment was created and, just as importantly, what it means for all Pennsylvanians today.
Register to join the event at the WITF website.
This month PPFF is also holding a photo submission challenge focused on residents’ rights to the “scenic value” of natural lands and what preservation of that means to you. Photos of the state’s parks and forests can be sent to PAEnviroRights50@paparksandforests.org.
Winners will be chosen on May 28. All entries will be included in a website slideshow.
