VICTORY IN EUROPE: V-E Day, or Victory in Europe Day, is the day the formal acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces by the Allies of World War II. This marked the end of World War II in Europe. Several countries observe a public holiday in honor of this milestone. It is called Victory Over Fascism Day, Liberation Day and Victory Day, depending on the country where the day is celebrated. The UK abbreviates it to VE Day while it is V-E Day in the United States.
Several former Soviet bloc countries including Russia and Belarus, and Serbia celebrate on May 9 as the end of all combat actions was specified at 23:01 Central European Time, which was already May 9 in the Soviet Union. Israel also marks VE Day on May 9, as a result of the large number of immigrants from the former Soviet bloc, but it is not a public holiday.

IN MEMORIAM: Each year, The Era publishes a special section of the newspaper devoted to the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice, and perished in service of their country.
Memorial Day is a day to remember those who died in active military service. This year, we not only want to honor those who died in service of their country, but also those veterans who came home from active duty but have since passed away.
We request that families who would like to see a loved one included in this year’s Memorial Day special section to submit a photo and a written description of their loved one’s service.
Electronic submissions are preferred. Please send submissions to: news@bradfordera.com
