DUBOIS — Through three innings, little separated the Bradford baseball team from DuBois.
The Beavers scored five runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth, however, to separate themselves from the Owls and run away with a 12-2 win over Bradford in five innings.
DuBois struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Garrett Starr came around to score on an Alex Pasternak single after drawing a walk. Bradford got two back in the third inning to take a brief lead, however, when an infield error on a ground ball hit by Nolan Ruolo scored Austen Davis and Michael Gow.
Bradford’s lead was short-lived, as Starr singled home a run before Brycen Dinkfelt scored on a wild pitch to put DuBois ahead for good.
Ruolo, Bradford’s starting pitcher, threw three innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned.
After Ruolo exited the game, DuBois got to the Owl bullpen. Starr ripped a bases-clearing double to start the Beavers’ fourth-inning rally and put DuBois up by four.
From there, Starr, Dinkfelt and Pasternak continued to pour on the offense. The trio combined for seven hits, six runs and 10 runs batted in.
“Our pitchers threw pretty well, but (DuBois’) two-through-four hitters did a great job at the plate,” Bradford coach Eric Haynoski said. “DuBois is a good hitting team and they hit it where we weren’t.”
Starr, who also threw five hitless innings on the mound for DuBois, finished with three hits, three runs and four RBI at the plate. He struck out nine Bradford hitters while walking three, and the only runs the senior surrendered were unearned.
“We’re looking to get back on track after this one,” Haynoski said. “We have to get our bats going if we want to start winning some ball games.”
Bradford will travel to Punxsutawney on Monday for a rematch of a 5-1 Punxsy win nearly a month prior.
