A Bradford man was jailed for allegedly threatening to go on a shooting spree if his father is convicted on federal charges.
Ernest L. Lathrop Jr., 21, of 2 Bushnell St., Apt. 119, was arraigned early Wednesday morning before District Judge David Engman on a charge of terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor.
According to the criminal complaint, around 9 p.m. Tuesday Bradford City Police received a report from the security guard at the High Rise apartment building at 2 Bushnell St. The guard reported that Lathrop had possibly made threats to people who lived in the building.
The security guard provided a written statement “that Lathrop Jr. told him that he was going to go on a shooting spree if his father were to get convicted,” court records stated. Lathrop Jr. allegedly claimed that he is the head of a gang and could have the building surrounded.
Lathrop Jr. was committed to McKean County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on May 5.
Ernest Lathrop Sr. of Smethport was indicted earlier this month by a federal grand jury on allegations that he impersonated a U.S. Marshal at an accident scene on Jan. 31. He allegedly activated emergency lights on his vehicle and told people there that he was a marshal.
Federal court documents state that Lathrop Sr. was arraigned Wednesday via video conference before Magistrate Judge Richard Lanzillo and is free on $10,000 unsecured bail. Lathrop entered a plea of not guilty Wednesday.
Attorney R. Damien Schorr was appointed to represent Lathrop Sr.
