ST. MARYS — Multiple Bradford competitors took home victories during Saturday’s St. Marys Invitational.
Gavin McGee, Alex Liners, Ryan Cottillion, Korie Dixon, Kayelyn Eschrich and Abbie Nuzzo each earned individual wins, while the both the boys and girls 1600-meter relay teams emerged victorious. In addition, the boys 3200-meter relay team also took home a victory.
For the boys, McGee won all three jump events, Liners took home victories in the 110 (16.8) and 300-meter hurdles (42.6) and Ryan Cottillion won the 800-meter run (2:08).
McGee had a career-best of 43’7” in the triple jump, 20’6.5” in the long jump and 5’8” in the high jump.
“Gavin has been getting better in the jumps all year long and he is working very hard for Districts,” Bradford boys coach Tom Tessena said.
In addition to his wins in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, Liners also placed third in the shot put with a 38’0”.
Along with Liners’ wins in both hurdle events, sophomores Troy Adkins and Brayden Plowman placed second and third, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.0 and 18.3. Sophomore Garritt Erickson was fifth (20.8). Adkins and Plowman came back in the 300-meter hurdles for third and fourth place finishes with times of 47.0 and 47.8, respectively.
Cottillion assisted Bradford’s 3200-meter relay team to a victory to go along with his win in the 800-meter run. The rest of the relay team consisted of freshmen Ian Pilon and Leo Paterniti and junior Jerid Wilmoth. Paterniti also had a personal best in the 1600-meter run (5:09).
“These guys ran 8:40.7, which was a nearly 14 second improvement,” Tessena said.
Pilon also placed third in the 1600 (4:57) and 800-meter runs (2:15).
The 1600-meter relay team, which ran 3:42 for the win, included Pilon, Wilmoth, Steve Morgan and Gabe Mitchell. Morgan placed second in the 400-meter dash (54.80), while Mitchell tied for second in the 100-meter dash (11.8). Morgan and Mitchell also ran in the second place 4×100 relay (46.7) with Wilmoth and Jake Pattison. Wilmoth anchored that 4×100 relay team.
“These guys ran well but had two bad handoffs that definitely cost us the win,” Tessena said. “We are really going to work hard to get those handoffs down by districts.”
Pattison also finished seventh in both the 100-meter and the 200-meter dashes, while senior Aiden Wright placed fourth in the 3200-meter run in 11:09.
In the shot put, Parker Shipman threw a personal best of 36’5 and freshman Dan Taylor threw 33’9.5. Shipman also finished second in the discus (106’7”) and Caden Fox was fifth in the Javelin (112’0”).
Senior Ian Paterniti placed second in the pole vault (11’0) and just missed 11’6.
“We have a very small team this year and with the Covid-19 complications and quarantines, we have to have almost everyone do three and four events like (Saturday),” Tessena said. “Our guys are stepping up to this challenge and they will have to do this at districts.”
The coudersport’s boys track team also had some success during the invitational with the Falcons winning the 4×100 relay. Dalton Keglovits earned wins in the 400-meter dash and pole vault, while Cale Ayers won both the shot put and discus events.
On the girls side, Korie Dixon placed first in the 800-meter run (2:29.6), while Kayelyn Eschrich (4’8) and Abbie Nuzzo (8’0) took home victories in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. The Lady Owls’ 1600-meter team, which included Dixon, Emma Swanson, Hannah Lary and Emily Bosworth also earned first place (4:22).
Lary also earned second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36.7 and fourth in the 1600-meter run in 5:59.9, while Bosworth finished second in the 1600-meter run (5:40.7) and helped the 3200-meter relay team to a second place finish along with Leila Bines, Kendall Gracey-Dalton and Dixon (11:20).
In the hurdles, Kelcie Little earned second place in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.20, Alexia Corignani placed fourth in 18.6 and Eliana Kane got eighth in 21.6. Swanson also earned second in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.22.
Nuzzo also had a strong performance in the jumps, getting second place in both the long jump (14’1) and triple jump (31’3). Also in the long jump, Alix Ordiway finished sixth (13’11) and Kara Longo came in eighth (13’8). Swanson also finished third in the triple jump (30’2) and Little got fifth (29’7.5). Longo also got third in the pole vault (7’6).
In the throws, Allyson Luke finished second in the shot put (31′ 2 ¾), while Sophia Asp came in fifth (29′ 5 ¼). Asp placed fifth in the discus (76′ 6) and Luke came in eighth (72′ 5), while Nuzzo finished fifth in the javelin (95’0). Other competitors who placed included Alix Ordiway in the 100-meter dash (4th, 13.8) and Alexia Corignani in the 200-meter dash (7th, 30.2).
“We had a good day with a great deal of improvement in all our events,” Bradford girls coach Larry Stillman said. “We had many athletes score their first varsity points, which is good to see. It was nice to compete with teams we don’t normally see, so that made it fun for the kids.”
Both Bradford teams will travel to DuBois on Tuesday.
The full results of the St. Marys Invitational were not available at press time.
