DUKE CENTER — Johnsonburg overcame a 3-0 deficit by plating 12 total runs within the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 12-3 road win over Otto-Eldred.
The loss was O-E’s first of the season.
Cole Sebastian got the Terrors (3-1) on the board first with a two-run homer in the first inning. O-E then took a 3-0 lead after Max Splain scored on an error by Jburg in the second inning.
The Rams’ (9-0) rally began in the fifth when Luke Zimmerman cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field, tying the game at 3-3. Then in the sixth, Domenic Allegretto, Dalton Stahli, Caden Smiley, Ethan Wells and Aiden Zimmerman (2 RBI) each recorded an RBI during Jburg’s nine-run inning that gave the Rams a commanding nine-run lead.
Along with his game-high three RBI, Luke Zimmerman struck out a game-high 12 O-E batters and walked just one. Gabe Watts relieved Zimmerman on the mound in the seventh and tossed a shutout inning to seal the Jburg victory. Watts struck out three straight which would’ve ended the game, but a passed ball on the third continued the inning. Watts earned his fourth strikeout after that.
For O-E, Jake Merry recorded five strikeouts on the mound, walked two and allowed seven runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of work.
“We played even with one of the best 2A schools in the district for 5.1 (innings), but three errors in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie and the wheels came off after that,” O-E coach Lance Baker said. “Cole’s homerun in the first gave us a huge early lift and Jake did an outstanding job keeping their lineup off balance. I commend him for his outing (Saturday).”
