Since 2014, Cinderella’s Closet in Kane has been making dreams come true for girls in 24 schools located in McKean, Elk, Cameron, Potter, Warren and Forest counties by providing them with gowns and all the accessories needed for school dances, such as proms, winter formals and homecoming.
The non-profit organization was originally founded by Jackie Cechetti after her daughter received a gift of 10 gowns from a family friend. For just $10, girls are able to go to Cinderella’s Closet and rent a beautiful gown, jewelry and shoes.
Cechetti’s daughter is grown and she’s now looking to pass the torch on to someone else. She’s hoping an individual will step up to take her place, and/or possibly an organization would like to adopt the program to keep it running for future generations.
Additionally, the program needs more volunteers to fill time slots to help run the location during dance seasons. They are open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., along with one other weekday that alternates.
Volunteer Kelly Barr Hughes said Saturday is typically their biggest day, as they’ve done up to 160 dresses in a day.
“Jackie has been around for seven years but she needs to step down,” said Hughes. “After the girls have graduated high school, they can always come back and pay it forward too. Parents are welcome to volunteer as well.”
Hughes explained that they are currently observing social distancing and masks are required for volunteers, girls and their chaperones. Temperatures are also taken at the door. Only three girls with chaperones are allowed in the location at a time and everything is wiped down between people.
“If it gets busy, we limit it to 30 minutes just to keep it safe,” she added.
