VISITING KANE: Marilyn Secco recently wrote about reading a book and visiting Kane. The article, “Reading a book and exploring a mansion,” was published in The Courier Express on March 26.
Secco shares her introduction to the idea, which started when a friend recommended Secco read a book. That book was “‘Tonight in the Rivers of Pittsburgh’ by Brian Lee Weakland, a native of Altoona who won the Associated Press Community News Reporter of the Year Award for his feature stories on Pennsylvania towns, people and landmarks, as well as other writing awards,” according to Secco’s work.
The book mentions The Allegheny National Forest, Kinzua Bridge and Kane. Secco shares details of the plot, which include the fictional governor of Pennsylvania, Brock Bailey, and his mansion located near Kinzua Bridge, where he lived when he was not required to be in Harrisburg.
Secco noted was intrigued by mention of the Leigh Rose Mansion, which is located on 230 Clay St. in Kane and currently houses the Kane Manor Country Inn. The structure is one Secco describes as “a three story beauty of Georgian and Colonial Revival architecture styles currently operating as a Bed and Breakfast,” and she notes, “I figured seeing that would be worth a trip to Kane on a cold February day that would have otherwise been rather boring.”
Secco met innkeeper Ben Miller and learned about the building, the current restoration work underway and the history of the building.
She enjoyed her visit so much she and her book club plan to have a meeting at the mansion this summer, complete with a catered lunch.
She wished Miller and his wife luck with the restorations and reminded readers that you never know where you might end up when you open a book.
