SMETHPORT — A former Smethport man was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court for allegations related to an assault that took place three years ago.
Mark A. Carlson, 48, of Camp Hill, was sentenced by President Judge John Pavlock to 11 to 22 months of incarceration with credit for 671 days of time served and four years of concurrent probation.
Carlson pleaded guilty March 4 to charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person. He entered the plea to allegations that on April 6, 2018, Carlson grabbed the victim by the throat, swung a machete and threatened to kill her and her daughter.
This was the second time Carlson was convicted of charges in the case.
At a jury trial in September 2019, he was found guilty of nine charges and sentenced that November to 33 to 66 months in state prison. Carlson filed an appeal after he was sentenced, and the Pennsylvania Superior Court overturned the conviction and vacated the sentence.
It was indicated at a status conference on Jan. 14, 2021, that a new trial would be set in the case. Instead, Carlson pleaded guilty.
Court records indicate Carlson went through the 2019 trial pro se — meaning without an attorney — then Philadelphia attorney Todd Mosser later filed an appeal on Carlson’s behalf. McKean County Public Defender Philip Clabaugh represented Carlson on Thursday.
