A Spartansburg man has been charged with homicide for allegedly shooting another man in the stomach during a backyard brawl Monday night in western Warren County.
Haggar Steven Brewer Sr., 57, of 24100 Cold Spring Road, is charged with criminal homicide, and jailed without bail.
According to the criminal complaint, Brewer shot and killed Victor Vernon Vantassel III, 57, at 7:35 p.m. Monday in the yard of 24110 Cold Spring Road.
At 7:35 p.m. Monday, Brenda Cioffi, 52, called state police to report that her boyfriend, Vantassel, had been shot. She said he had been in a verbal and then physical altercation with Brewer.
Brewer was on top of Vantassel on the ground when Brewer pulled a gun and shot him in the abdomen area, the complaint stated. While state troopers were enroute to the scene, Brewer called 911 and was forwarded to the state police barracks. He said, “somebody attacked me in the yard and I shot him,” the complaint stated.
Vantassel died at the scene, according to the police.
Cioffi told police Brewer had approached her behind her house and started to yell at her. Vantassel, who had been asleep, came outside to see what was happening. He and Brewer began yelling at each other, and then began to fight physically. Cioffi, who had gone back inside her residence, said she was watching out the window and saw Brewer on top of Vantassel. She heard a gunshot, and then Brewer walked away, according to the criminal complaint.
Brewer was interviewed by police, and said he was worried that Vantassel was going to hurt him. He estimated the entire altercation lasted about 30 seconds.
Brewer was arraigned early Tuesday before District Judge Todd Woodin and remanded to jail without bail. A preliminary hearing has been set for 1 p.m. April 6.
