POETRY: The newsroom was delighted to receive a new poem from Frances Haight of Kane, a regular contributor to ‘Round the Square. Haight’s contributions were paused for a while, but she has shared a new poem in honor of her upcoming birthday.
We won’t share her age, since we know that isn’t polite, but we do wish her the happiest of days on March 18.
In the Winter of My Life
I know I am now entering
The winter of my life,
I enjoy most of my days,
Although there is some strife.
I love to hear the chirping birds,
But my hearing is not the best,
I love looking at all of nature,
Although my eyes now fail the test.
My older body creaks and groans,
But I like to go for walks.
My speech gets a bit tangled,
But I sure do love to talk!
The hot summer sun makes me wilt,
Until I cannot even reason,
The cold and dampness makes me hurt
So I prefer the fall season.
My family thinks I am too old-fashioned,
Well I guess I really am,
But I cling to the old values,
And teach them to others when I can.
These years are called the Golden Age,
But tarnish creeps over the shine,
Yes I am in the winter of my life,
And most of it is really fine.
