Each year, over one million Girl Scouts sell over 200 million packages of Girl Scout cookies, raising over $800 million that goes to support Girl Scout councils and individual troops.
While many look forward to enjoying these delicacies each year, there are many who may not be able to afford such niceties, due to current life circumstances. Thanks to the generosity of people in the community, over 300 individuals who may not otherwise have been able to enjoy these tasty delights will get to enjoy a box.
Bonnie Leposa talked to The Era about how working together, Cadet Group 26010, Brownie Troop 20335 and Daisy Troop 20029 were able to collect hundreds of donations of cookies for various local non-profit organizations.
“They sell cookies every year and there’s always an option for the gift of sharing,” explained Leposa. “This year, one of my girls’ parents contacted me shortly after the sale began and said someone bought 50 boxes to donate to the Friendship Table.”
After seeing such generosity, the troops did a big push on social media to see if they could double that amount — in the end they ended up quadrupling it.
“We ended up getting 200 boxes for the Friendship Table,” she said.
Leposa said soon after, individuals started inquiring to see if they can donate cookies to other places as well. The troops ended up with around 330 boxes that will be donated to The Friendship Table, Bradford Manor, Bradford Ecumenical Home and the Salvation Army Food Pantry.
“The community outpouring was amazing,” exclaimed Leposa. “People just left and right were contacting me. We had people donating 15 to 20 boxes, others donating $100 worth of cookies.”
The generosity doesn’t stop there. Leposa said the girls from the Cadet group are also making suncatchers for each room of the residents at Bradford Manor, which will be donated along with a box of cookies for all the residents that are able to eat them.
