Terry D. Lopus has announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for Bradford City Council during the May primary election.
Lopus is a graduate of Bradford Area High School as well as graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Lopus is licensed by the State of Pennsylvania as a nursing home administrator. In May of 2017 he began employment with Guardian Healthcare based in Brockway, serving as a transitional administrator in several Guardian facilities. In January of 2020 he assumed the administrator position at Lakeview Healthcare in Smethport. Lopus’ prior experience includes over 30 years in long term care administration as well as serving on the board and as president of the Pennsylvania Association of County Affiliated Homes.
Presently Lopus is in the fourth year of his term on city council, having been elected in the fall of 2017 beginning his term in January 2018. He was appointed in July 2017 to complete the remainder of Fred Proper’s term.
Lopus has prior public service having served on Bradford City Council from 1982 to 1986. He had the opportunity to serve two years each under the former council manager form of government and following a referendum, two years under the current commission form of government.
He served on the Bradford Area School Board from 1989 to 1994, holding the position of treasurer for several years.
Presently Lopus serves as a member of the Bradford City Water Authority as well as a member of the Smethport Rotary Club. In 2006 Lopus was awarded Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow.
“We all are happy and relieved that the year 2020 is behind us,” said Lopus. “Despite the rapidly escalating pandemic and the numerous and incredible challenges imposed on us; we persisted achieving most of our objectives.
“Our accomplishments were numerous including the beautiful Streetscape improvement project; the wonderful collaboration and partnership that brought the vision of the Veterans organization(s) to reality with Hometown Heroes banners hung throughout the City; successfully navigated through the pandemic with safety as a priority while maintaining essential services and operations; and preparing and adopting the 2021 budget as the most fiscally sound and strongest budget in many, many years.”
Lopus talked about the qualities he believes a city council member should have.
“In contemplating seeking the nomination and serving on Bradford City Council I sincerely believe this governing body should be transparent, friendly, good listeners, responsive and ultimately accountable to the people of Bradford,” he said. “While there may always be room for improvement, I believe your City Council has these qualities and attributes.
“With the COVID-19 pandemic we know we have some hard and different times ahead however I am confident that with our combined efforts, vaccinations, and following the recommended precautions things will drastically improve and we will return to a safe and acceptable ‘new normal,’ he said. “Moving forward I respectfully ask for your support to serve on Bradford City Council and to be part of the Team that leads Bradford into the future.”
