The American Association of University Women – Bradford Branch met on Saturday via Zoom technology.
President Holly Spittler opened the business meeting by thanking the hospitality committee of Kay Hurley, Jane Sanderson and Linda Gault and the members of the social callers committee, Ann Cavallero and Emily Zinsner. Susan Hughes, assistant treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report.
Program vice president Madeline Miles reviewed the upcoming programs, and announced that the next meeting will be on March 13. The program will feature “Famous Women Re-enactments.” Members will select a woman who has made a significant contribution in science, medicine, the arts, politics, or education. Each member will become that woman for a day and will be prepared to share information and provide clues about her life and accomplishments while the group will attempt to identify the woman.
Ann Cavallero reported that the date of 100th Anniversary Luncheon has been moved from April 10 to Nov. 13, 2021.
Members commented on the fascinating profile on Ella Boyce Kirk, the nation’s first female superintendent of schools, which appeared in the Bradford Era’s Spotlight on Extraordinary Woman Series on Feb. 6. The series is a cooperative effort by the Bradford Landmark Society and the Bradford Branch of AAUW to place a spotlight on women who have made a difference while celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the local branch in 1921. The series will run throughout the year.
After the business meeting, Miles introduced the program, “Every Treasure Tells a Story.” Members were invited to bring an item to the meeting that they treasure and take a few minutes to share with the group why it is important to them. The treasures that were shared came in all shapes and sizes and included inlaid wooden furniture from Germany, a grandparents’ love story, a fossil of a trilobite found in Westline, a wall hanging purchased in a Mexican village and family heirlooms of embroidered works of art. Miles thanked Kay Hurley for suggesting this interactive program that sparked conversations and provided insight into the values, interests and backgrounds of all who participated.
