SMETHPORT — The McKean County commissioners issued a warning Tuesday about a scam that is using phone numbers of legitimate county offices to call victims.

County officials reported that people are getting calls asking for payments or money, and the caller ID shows county courthouse phone numbers. The public is asked to be wary of phone calls, even from local or familiar numbers, asking for money. Reports of telephone and email scams are on the rise and the public should be wary of any suspicious phone calls.
