The Federal Bureau of Prisons is reporting 15 inmates who tested positive for COVID-19 at Federal Correctional Institution at McKean.
To date, another 226 inmates have recovered from the illness, according to the bureau. No staff members have tested positive, and no COVID-19-related deaths were reported at FCI-McKean.
This is down from active cases reported in early December, when FCI-McKean had 134 people test positive and two people recovered.
The FCI-McKean page on the Bureau of Prisons website states that the Lafayette Township facility current houses 841 inmates: 701 in the main prison and 140 in the adjoining camp.
Visitation at the prison is suspended until further notice, the website indicates.
Throughout the federal prison system, there are 4,718 inmates and 2,049 staff members with confirmed positive test results. To date, 38,535 inmates and 3,553 staff members have recovered.
According to the bureau, 190 inmates and three staff members across the federal system have died from COVID-19. Four of those inmates were on home confinement when they died.
Altogether, there are 123,052 inmates in institutions managed by the Bureau of Prisons, and another 13,807 in community based facilities. The bureau employs roughly 36,000 staff members.
The bureau has started testing asymptomatic inmates in an effort to slow the transmission of the disease. There have been 98,614 inmates tested, with 42,391 testing positive. There are 1,381 tests pending.
