SMETHPORT — During the last quarter of 2020, more than 70 pounds of unused medication was turned in to area law enforcement for safe disposal.
On Tuesday, McKean District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reported that from Oct. 7 to Jan. 5, there had been 17.2 pounds of unused medication collected at the Bradford City Police station; 9.4 pounds at the Bradford Township Police station; 30.4 pounds at the McKean County Sheriff’s office; 14.6 pounds at the Kane Borough Police station; and 2 pounds at the Lewis Run state police barracks; for a total of 73.6 pounds.
Each quarter, the county detectives with the District Attorney’s office collect and weigh the unused medication in the boxes and arrange for their disposal.
The collection boxes were sponsored by the PA District Attorney’s Association and the PA American Water Company.
The drop boxes are for anyone in the area to discard any unused medication they may have to prevent it from being used by anyone other than to whom it was prescribed as one step in preventing abuse and to prevent it from being flushed and impacting our water supply.
