After a tumultuous 2020, filled with fears centered around the pandemic and political discord, hopefully the upcoming weather is representative of what is to come in the new year.
Aaron Tyburski, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in State College, said we can expect sun this week and a calm and warmer than usual weekend.
Tyburski said the area will see rain possibly mixed with snow during the day today, with gusty winds up to 30 mph. Temperatures will then drop into the 20s tonight, turning the rain into snow, although accumulation of snow should be less than an inch.
Going into Tuesday, the area can expect partly sunny skies, with highs in the mid 20s.
“It will be a typical winter day; maybe some snow showers with no accumulation,” said Tyburski.
Tuesday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 11 degrees. Temperatures are then expected to warm up Wednesday into New Year’s Eve.
“Wednesday looks cloudy with a high near 40 degrees. Thursday will have rain showers with a high near 45 degrees — around 10 to 15 degrees higher than average for this time of year,” explained Tyburski.
The rain will eventually turn into some light snow on New Year’s Eve night, as the temperatures fall into the 20s. Although accumulations are expected to be light, Tyburski encouraged anyone expecting to be driving around midnight to be alert for any snow showers.
New Year’s Day into the weekend will bring temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees during the day, with lows between 25 and 30 degrees at night.
“Those first couple days of the New Year are going to be benign, with temperatures warmer than normal — things will be quiet and calm,” said Tybursk in conclusion.
