With a pandemic playing in the background and so much political strife, many are looking forward to the comfort of Christmas to bring back some normalcy into their lives. This year, the Salvation Army, in partnership with the Elk County Fair, will shine some light on the world with their drive-thru Christmas light display at the Elk County Fairgrounds.
Major Ron Heimbrock said the idea came about while brainstorming fundraising ideas.
“As the Salvation Army on a national level, put out word of our theme for this year’s Christmas Kettle Campaign, ‘Rescue Christmas,’ it became clear what we must do,” he explained. “Have a Christmas event where families can have a more enjoyable Christmas experience while remaining safe from the risk of COVID-19 — a drive through Christmas light display was the answer.”
Heimbrook thought the Elk County Fairgrounds would be the best place to have it, as the fair was canceled and the grounds would serve as the perfect spot. After receiving a go ahead from the Elk County Fair board, the two organizations began putting out word that they needed companies, organizations and churches to build their own Christmas displays for the event.
“It is a way for community members to share their spirit of Christmas to others,” he said.
The Holiday Lights at the Fair will begin from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Dec. 10 and run each evening up to December 20 at the Elk County Fairgrounds 316 Dietz Rd., Kersey. A $10 donation per vehicle will be asked. Proceeds to benefit the Salvation Army and the Elk County Fair.
“While this is our first time having this event, we are hopeful to have this be an annual event,” said Heimbrook in conclusion.
