The Federal Correctional Institution at McKean has had well over a hundred cases of COVID-19 at its facility.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, 134 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Lafayette Township facility. Two inmates have recovered from the illness.
There have been no deaths, and no staff members have tested positive at FCI-McKean, according to the bureau.
These numbers were updated as of 3 p.m. Thursday. They are based on confirmed lab results.
A message at the top of the FCI-McKean page on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website states that visitation at the facility has been suspended until further notice.
The page indicates that on Thursday there were 843 inmates total housed at FCI-McKean: 696 in the main prison and 147 in the satellite camp prison.
Across the nation, the Bureau of Prisons reported that 4,901 federal inmates and 1,509 prison staff members have confirmed positive test results for COVID-19. There are currently 21,677 inmates and 2,057 staff members reported as having recovered.
A total of 149 federal inmates and two staff members have died from the disease.
FCI-McKean did not return a request for comment regarding the facility’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts. However, the Bureau of Prisons talked about measures that federal prisons in general are taking.
Health services staff members are making daily or twice daily rounds to check inmates’ temperatures. Also, inmates have been issued cleaning supplies, and the facilities are sanitizing more often.
Staff and inmates have been issued cloth masks, and staff are masks and gloves in quarantine or isolation units, as well as gowns in isolation units. Quarantine units house asymptomatic inmates, and isolation units house symptomatic inmates, according to the bureau.
Inmates who have COVID-19 risk factors are being considered for home confinement.
