It’s December, the holidays are creeping closer, and it’s time to write Santa a letter. This year, Kane residents of all ages can submit their letter to be read on-air.
It may be a bike, a video game or a new building set, but regardless of the gift children are hoping for, this year’s coronavirus protocols may make a visit to Santa more difficult to accomplish — not to mention potentially bad for the jolly old soul’s health. Therefore, it may be the year to reach out in a more old-fashioned way. On the plus side, letter writing can be fun, and the letters might be read for area radio listeners to hear.
Kane’s radio station, 101.7 WXZY, will have letters read on air at 5 p.m. on the weekdays, beginning Dec. 9 and running through Dec. 23.
“We want to help spread a little more holiday cheer,” said Kate Kennedy, Executive Director of Kane Area Development Center.
For families who want to hear their letters read, the drop-off site is the Kane Chamber of Commerce, located at 54 Fraley St.
Anyone from the area is welcome to write to Santa, then tune in through the radio’s live stream.
In 2012, the US Postal Service celebrated the 100th anniversary of handling the care and delivery of letters to Santa. While the letters that are to be read on air won’t necessarily be delivered by a mail carrier, they will be written in a continuation of a long-standing tradition.
