ST. MARYS — South St. Marys Street Elementary School in St. Marys is closed for in-person learning today through Friday.
The temporary closure is due to a high number of staff quarantines resulting from COVID-19 exposure, the St. Marys Daily Press reported. Students will return to school Nov. 23.
District leaders notified the community on Thursday that they had a call with the Pennsylvania Department of Education because Elk County was back in substantial status as far as the spread of the disease. They explained that substantial status meant the county had more than 100 cases/100,000 people and/or 10% or more positivity.
The school district noted it will continue to watch what happens in the district.
A letter to parents issued on Thursday indicated that special in-person instruction may be considered for certain students in the district in the event that a school closure exceeds five days. Those students would be ones with a complex educational disability who receive full-time special education services and/or require instruction that cannot be reasonably delivered in a virtual model.
