A Hazel Hurst man is in McKean County Jail following an alleged domestic incident on Halloween morning.

Jeffrey P. Carney, 49, of 462 Main St., Hazel Hurst, is charged with strangulation, a second-degree felony; terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor; false imprisonment and simple assault, second-degree misdemeanors; three counts of harassment, a third-degree misdemeanor and two summaries; and summary criminal mischief.

The criminal complaint states that at 7:52 a.m. Oct. 31, Lewis Run-based state police were dispatched to Hazel Hurst for a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, police talked to a woman who said she and Carney started arguing on Oct. 30, and it continued through the day.

During the argument, Carney put his hands around her neck at least four times, disrupting her breathing, and the woman told police that “it felt as if I was going to die,” the complaint stated. He also allegedly punched her in the face at one point, breaking her glasses.

She tried to leave, but he would not let her; he kept pushing her to the ground and grabbing her by the arms and shoulders, according to court records. He allegedly kept her from calling for medical and law enforcement assistance, too, and threatened to kill her if she called police. She was able to escape after he fell asleep.

Carney is incarcerated in lieu of $25,000 bail, and a preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 16.

Carney has a second assault case pending against him, too. A trial is pending for him on charges including simple assault, resisting arrest, criminal attempt-escape.

Court records allege that on Jan. 13 Carney, while in the process of being committed to McKean County Jail, became irate and tried to leave when an officer told him he couldn’t bring certain items into the jail; two officers were injured in the process of trying to restrain Carney.

No trial date is set in the jail assault case.
