COUDERSPORT — UPMC Cole has joined hospitals across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by going 100% smoke-free on all grounds, buildings, and offices.

The new policy prohibits use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, on the UPMC Cole campus as well as its office buildings and clinics.

“Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S, and secondhand smoke is a not only a proven cause of cancer, but can worsen symptoms of other medical conditions,” said Janie Hilfiger, president, UPMC Cole and UPMC Wellsboro. “Taking this step, shows UPMC Cole’s commitment to promoting the health and well-being of our community and providing a safe and healthy workplace for our staff.”

The use of tobacco and tobacco products is prohibited within all UPMC buildings and on all UPMC property across the state. This includes the use of tobacco products in parked personal vehicles in UPMC parking lots.

Visitor compliance will be monitored and is the responsibility of all staff. Information about smoking cessation will be given to visitors who are observed smoking or using tobacco products on UPMC Cole property.
