BOWL OF COLORS: For 57 years, Andy Heffner and his wife have been making the trek to the firemen’s monument in Oak Hill Cemetery to have a picnic and enjoy the autumn leaves.
Andy told us he wasn’t sure if they would be able to make the trip from Ormsby this year after hearing about the storm damage at Oak Hill this summer.
His concern was for naught: “Sunday we decided we’re going to venture up there,” Andy said. “They’ve got that fixed up jim-dandy.”
He noted that even the road was regraveled.
But what Andy really wanted to talk about is what a pretty area we live in.
Looking at the leaves on Sunday, Andy thought, “You know, Bradford sits in a bowl of beautiful colors. I wish I was an artist and I could paint those colors. It is really astounding just where Bradford sits.”
He noted that when the sun hits the leaves the color is “fluorescent.”
The Heffners also went for a ride from Ormsby to Mount Jewett to view the colors on a road he calls Turkey Track but he said others call Lindholm Road.
Andy was glad they made it out to see the leaves before the rain comes.
PENN’S WOODS: Speaking of enjoying Pennsylvania’s autumn colors, residents are invited to get a close-up of the leaves by celebrating A Walk in Penn’s Woods this October.
A Walk in Penn’s Woods was first held in 2017, when event organizers started inviting people to organize walking events — or just go for a walk — on the first Sunday of October throughout Pennsylvania.
This year, instead of enjoying Pennsylvania’s wilderness on just one day, organizers have made it a month-long celebration. And you don’t have to go a planned group hike to take part — you can just make a point of visiting your favorite trail or wilderness area this October.
