Friends of Allegheny Wilderness will hold its next trail stewardship event Oct. 10-11 on the 13-mile Hickory Creek Wilderness trail.
Precautions due to the ongoing coronavirus situation will include limiting group size to 10 people, wearing masks, taking temperatures and social distancing.
Anyone who has COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 is asked not to come. Also, participants are asked to bring their own tools, such as an axe, and their own hard hat if they have one.
People should bring their own food, water, and cooking stove so group members are not sharing such items, and they are asked to bring hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes if they have them.
The group will meet the morning of Oct. 10 at the trailhead and hike into the wilderness to clear downed woody debris and live encroaching vegetation from the trail. Participants will camp in the wilderness that night, and then hike out the next afternoon.
Since this is a federally designated wilderness, permanently protected from all forms of development and motorized and mechanized uses, they will be using hand tools only such as axes, pruners, loppers, and hand saws. First-timers and beginners are welcome.
There is no charge to participate in this program, but volunteers should bring all of their own camping equipment and come fully prepared for weather conditions.
