OLEAN, N.Y. — The Olean Meditation Center will present Soulful Expressions’ showing of the documentary film “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the center at 2275 Dugan Road, Olean.
Admission is free and the film is suitable for children of all ages.
Soulful Expressions is a nine-part art, music, dance, theatre, photography, and film series reflecting humanity’s inherent passion for soulful expression spanning time, place, and culture.
“Cave of forgotten Dreams” is a journey into the Chauvet Cave of France, where cave art by skilled artists from 33,000 B.C. has remained untouched.
Denise Prince, art history professor at Canisius College, will discuss the unique sophistication of the cave art as explored in the documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.”
As torch lights flickered across the walls painted with horses, bison, lions, and now-extinct animals, a surreal sense of power and movement surges across the dark walls of the Chauvet Cave in France, offering a glimpse of what it might have been like in 33,000 BC. In the film, Werner Herzog, filmmaker, and a small crew are given a rare chance to film inside France’s Chauvet Cave, where the walls come alive with the world’s oldest surviving paintings which represent humanity’s earliest dreams.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Tri-County Arts Council.
Attendees are asked to wear masks. Seating will be arranged for safe distancing.
