Limited in-person interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many challenges for many professions. This is especially true in regards to mandated reporters of child abuse, such as teachers, doctors and social workers, as reports of child abuse and neglect have decreased significantly since social distancing efforts have gone into effect.
In fact, according to Angela Liddle, CEO of the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA), calls to report child abuse and neglect to ChildLine have dropped by an astounding 50 percent since the beginning of the pandemic.
Liddle explained that increased family stressors often increase instances of physical abuse to children, therefore it is well known abuse is increasing, even though the number of reported cases has declined.
Despite restrictions easing and more brick and mortar schools opening their doors to students, many parents are still choosing to send their children to cyber schools. This makes it especially important for educators and other professionals to recognize the signs of abuse and neglect, whether it be from an in-person or virtual environment.
Liddle noted a variety of red flags to look for, such as declining grades, lessened or lack of participation in classroom activities, a disheveled or unkempt appearance, weight loss or physical marks and/or bruises. Additionally, when interacting with children virtually, educators should pay attention to what they may hear or see.
Spending more time online also increases the possibility of children becoming exposed to virtual predators.
PFSA provides free trainings for staff and volunteers working with children on how to recognize and report suspected child abuse, which meet all the requirements set by the PA Department of Human Services, PA Department of Education and PA Department of State. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all trainings are being conducted virtually at this time.
