A Smethport man accused of having child pornography was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court to a term in state prison.
Chad M. Caldwell, 26, will serve three to six years in state prison with credit for 15 days of time served for a charge of sexual abuse of children. He must register as a sex offender for his lifetime, and he is to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18.
Caldwell pleaded guilty June 4 to allegations that from Feb. 3, 2019, through Oct. 31, 2019, he possessed images depicting children under the age of 18.
Authorities were first alerted on Feb. 3, 2019, when a file was being transferred over the internet. On Oct. 31, police went to Caldwell’s home, where he still had child pornography.
Police found Caldwell to be in possession of 50 images of child pornography on a computer and cell phone that depicted indecent contact with prepubescent children, believed to be under the age of 13.
District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer noted at Thursday’s hearing that he had a prior sex offense when he was over age 14 but still a juvenile.
