Preliminary hearings are scheduled for next week for the three men accused of attempted murder in the Sept. 6 beating and stabbing of an Emporium man.

Samuel Scott Sherwood, 34, of Emporium; Shayne Aaron Sage, 23, of Emporium; and Jeremiah Joshua Putt, 22, of Smethport, are all incarcerated on $250,000 bail each on charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault with extreme indifference, first-degree felonies, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree felonies.

According to the criminal complaints, at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, the three men contacted a 54-year-old man via phone messages. The men traveled to the victim’s residence on East Greenwood Avenue and “attempted to lure him outside by knocking on his door.”

At some point, the victim approached the three men a short distance from his residence. The three assaulted the victim, striking him numerous times in the body and face with a wooden dowel rod, a metal pipe and a hatchet, the complaints read.

The victim also suffered two stab wounds to the abdomen, according to the complaint.

“The assault was halted by a neighbor who yelled at the co-defendants,” the complaints stated. “The defendants ran away from the scene leaving behind the bloody dowel rod and metal pipe. A blood trail was observed from where the assault took place to the victim’s residence.”

The complaint for Putt indicated the three men had left the scene in Putt’s vehicle, and that he told police the names of Sherwood and Sage.

Police said Putt currently resides with Sage, the complaints stated.

All three defendants were arraigned Sunday evening before District Judge Mark Jacob in St. Marys and remanded to Cameron County Prison. Preliminary hearings for the three are scheduled for Thursday morning before District Judge Barry Brown in Cameron County.

Sherwood’s hearing is at 10 a.m., Putt’s at 10:15 a.m., and Sage’s at 10:30 a.m.

No attorneys were noted on the online court dockets for the men.
