Celebrate Labor Day weekend with an outdoor program at Sinnemahoning State Park. Programs include monarch butterfly tagging, local history presentations, and opportunities to build on your outdoor survival skills. Pre-registration is recommended. Face masks are required for all programs
The Pennsylvania Bucktails event will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Attendees will learn the fascinating history of the Pennsylvania Bucktails, the unit that was formed from the woodsmen, loggers, and rafters of the mountains and valleys of Northern Pennsylvania and became the most famous Pennsylvania regiment of the American Civil War. All ages welcome. The program is limited to 24 people. Meet in front of the Wildlife Center.
Monarch Watch Butterfly Tagging will take from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The event will include a monarch butterfly migration presentation followed by a short walk to catch, tag, and release monarch butterflies. Aerial nets will be provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk through fields. The program is limited to 24 people. Meet in front of the Wildlife Center.
Austin Dam Disaster will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the campground amphitheater, where participants will discover the story behind the 1911 collapse of the Austin Dam. A brief campground talk will be followed by a 90-minute movie, “The Austin Disaster, 1911,” narrated by Willie Nelson. All are welcome to attend. The program is limited to 24 people.
Reading a Topo Map will be held from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Sunday, starting out in front of the Wildlife Center. Topographic maps provide useful information to hikers, hunters, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Learn how to read land features, determine distance, and access these helpful maps. Program intended for ages 10 to adult and may include travel over uneven terrain. The program is limited to 24 people. .
Using a Compass will be held from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Sunday starting at 40 Maples Day Use Area. When exploring the woods in the PA Wilds, visitors can’t always rely on their GPS to work. Stay safe in the outdoors by learning how to use a compass to orient a map and to travel in a specific direction. Program includes hands-on practice through family activities. The program is intended for ages 8 to adult and may include travel over uneven terrain. The program is limited to 24 people.
Weather: Fair, Foul, and Formidable will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the campground amphitheater. Attendees will learn weather facts such as what is most deadly — lightning, wind, or hail— and what to do if a storm popped up while someone was exploring the outdoors. They will learn about Earth’s turbulent atmosphere and the forces that make the day fair or foul. A brief campground talk will be followed by a 35-minute Eyewitness DVD, “Weather.” The program is good for all ages. The program is limited to 24 people.
To mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19, until further notice, all programs at Sinnemahoning State Park will be held outdoors, will be limited to 25 people or less, will follow social-distancing guidelines, and will require use of face masks.
