LEGION POSTS: Larry Fay of Alaska just wrote to the newsroom in regard to Saturday’s edition and the story about Bucktail Post #138, Smethport American Legion, celebrating the centennial anniversary of its charter.
Fay notes he finds it interesting that “Anchorage’s John Henry Post #1 was chartered one day later on Sept. 17, 1919.”
He goes on to point out that Paris, France has an American Legion. “Paris Post #1 was chartered by the American Legion on Dec. 13, 1919, just several months after the first Caucus meetings of the Legion in Paris on March 1919. Paris Post #1 members have been actively
supporting the community ever since (except for an absence from 1941 to 1945 during the German occupation of France). The original members were veterans of the American Expeditionary Forces that came to France in 1917 to join their allies in World War I,” Fay said via email.
“As a 53 year member of Bucktail Post #138, I thank all veterans for their service and encourage them to join their local Legion and VFW. Both are very worthwhile organizations.”
