The medication drop boxes, installed at several locations across McKean County, continue to be utilized by residents. District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer told The Era that the first 6 months of the year saw a total of 361.4 lbs of medications collected. Divided by box location, collections were as follows: Bradford City: 185.6 lbs.; Bradford Township.: 32.8 lbs.; Sheriff’s Department.: 102.8 lbs.; Kane Police Dept.: 39.2 lbs., and Pennsylvania State Police: 1.0 lb.
The goal is to keep unused medication out of the hands of anyone other than to whom it was prescribed in an attempt to reduce drug dependency. The boxes are available to everyone.
Detectives with the District Attorney’s Office collect the medication from the boxes and it is then properly discarded by the National Guard.
The boxes are installed at Bradford City Police Station; Bradford Township Police Department; Kane Borough Police Station; Sheriff’s Department (location inside the McKean County Jail); and State Police Barracks. The boxes were sponsored by the PA District Attorney’s Association and PA American Water Company.
