SMETHPORT — The McKean County Conservation District is beginning a new treatment program for landowners with specific invasive plant populations.
Citizens with property in the Tionesta watershed (Kane area) can qualify and register for free Japanese knotweed treatment by MCCD. Goatsrue is a state and federally listed noxious weed, toxic to livestock. Citizens with property in McKean or surrounding counties with goatsrue infestations can qualify and register for a free treatment program by MCCD. Both programs are funded through grants from the state Department of Agriculture.
Did you recently receive a letter from the McKean County Conservation District about these plants? Recent roadside plant surveys have identified potential landowners who may have these plants on their property. County assessment records were used for outreach mailings.
If you return the landowner agreement in the mailing, you will be registered for the treatment by a licensed, insured pesticide applicator. If you didn’t receive a letter and have goatsrue on your property; or live in the immediate Kane area and have Japanese knotweed; contact Maddie Stanisch at 814-887-4020 ormmstanisch@mckeancountypa.org to let us know you are interested in treatment. Grant funds are limited, but we seek to assist as many landowners as possible for control of these problem plants.
