Local high schools are finding innovative ways to honor graduates while keeping students and their families as safe as possible.
Here’s how schools are marking graduation for 2020:
• BRADFORD: A virtual ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. June 4, and can be found at the time by visiting the school’s website or www.youtube.com/user/WOWLTV/featured. The school will provide a designated time to graduates to walk the stage on June 5 and receive their diplomas and honor awards. This will be done in small groups.
• KANE: A ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Kane Family Drive-In. Graduates will be escorted from the high school to the drive in prior to the ceremony by local fire departments.
• PORT ALLEGANY: Virtual commencement exercises will begin at 7 p.m. today and be presented on the school district’s website. Students and parents were also afforded the opportunity to take the walk across the stage on three separate occasions a couple of weeks ago. The high school auditorium was set up for graduation, and students and their families were able to get pictures and videos.
• OSWAYO VALLEY: The 113th Annual Commencement will be held at 5:45 p.m. today as a livestream, available through the district website. Each graduate, along with four guests, will be invited into the building on a rotating basis. Third honors, salutatorian and valedictorian giving their commencement addresses, followed by each graduate walking across the stage to receive their diploma and scholarship recognition.
• OTTO-ELDRED: A ceremony will be made available at 7 p.m. today via the school’s YouTube channel. Speeches will still happen — some pre-recorded, some live — and military will be recognized. Earlier this week, students were scheduled for a time individually onsite for about 20 min each to get graduation photos, turn in supplies and write in each other’s yearbook. Paper programs will still be made and provided to all families as a keepsake, along with digital copies of all pictures and an electronic senior showcase free of charge. The showcase will include a 20-word memoir and photo of a graduation cap decorated by each student.
• SMETHPORT: Graduation will be held June 5.
• NORTHERN POTTER: A virtual ceremony is set for 7:30 p.m. today; seniors were recorded walking across the stage and receiving awards and scholarships. Senior spotlights were posted to the district Facebook page, as well as a virtual recording of the Northern Potter Alma Mater to add to the 2020 graduation ceremony.
• COUDERSPORT: A virtual graduation ceremony will air at 11 a.m. Saturday on Zito Media local 9 and on the district’s website, coudyschools.net.
• AUSTIN: A pre-recorded graduation ceremony will air at 7 p.m. today at https://animoto.com/play/xhfSQKYSr7g1afnYxW1fPA.
• RIDGWAY: The district plans to announce its graduation plans today, as district officials anticipate receiving more guidance today for schools in the green phase.
• ST. MARYS: A graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Dutch Country Stadium. It will also be broadcast on River 98.9 and Facebook Live. Following the ceremony, a parade of graduates will be conducted through downtown St. Marys. The anticipated time of the parade will be between 8:30 to 9 p.m., and the community is invited to come outside at that time and show their support.
• JOHNSONBURG: A ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. today in the back parking lot of the high school. The class will be honored via a “drive-in” style ceremony with live speeches. Seniors and families will be able to listen to speeches from their vehicles and then be called forward to the stage to receive their diploma. Audio will also be set up so that everyone can hear the ceremony and it will be broadcast via Facebook live. Seniors will be allowed to decorate their caps.
