James T. Yohe and Caleb J. Nuzzo were awarded the 2020 Amanda Susan Pearce Memorial Scholarship for $500 each.
Yohe, son of Thomas M. and Amy S. Yohe of Bradford, plans to study secondary education-social studies at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
He has been a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, earning the title of Eagle Scout. He is a member of the West Branch United Methodist Church.
Yohe has volunteered for groups and events including Little League, the Bradford Manor, the Choral Boosters, the Marching Owls and Wesley Woods Camp, the First Presbyterian church, the Kinzua Bridge Festival, the Italian Festival, the Crook Farm Country Fair and Old Time Music Festival, a local owl banding site, and midget and junior varsity football.
He has been varsity captain of the football team and member of the baseball team, the Boys Youth Basketball League and community soccer team. Yohe has taken violin and clarinet lessons at the school district and participated in band. He was in choir, show choir, district choir and three musicals.
Yohe’s work experience includes Walmart and The Bradford Era.
Nuzzo, son of Jason and Lori Nuzzo of Bradford, plans to attend Slippery Rock University with a goal of studying exercise science and earning a doctorate in physical therapy.
A current member of Believers Chapel, Nuzzo has volunteered with children’s church at Believers Chapel and Sawyer Evangelical Church. He has also volunteered with the Boys Youth Basketball League, the Bradford Manor, the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, Little League, Special Olympics basketball and the Italian Festival.
At school, he’s volunteered with Key Club, new student building tours, freshmen orientation, Peer Tutoring, the School Street Elementary School Halloween parade, student school climate feedback committee, SeAL Challenge Helper and BAHS College Fair. Nuzzo has served as a student council homeroom representative and a student council cabinet member, and he participated in the United Way Junior Ambassador Program.
As a baseball player, he was BAHS MVP. In football, he has served as captain, team co-MVP and league all-star, and he participated in the Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic. He has served as captain of the basketball team.
Nuzzo is a high honor roll student and was a member of National Honor Society.
Nuzzo’s work experience includes Lawn Care, Hobbs Landscaping, Bradford Gun Club and the Boys Youth Basketball League.
The award was established in 2001 in memory of Amanda Susan Pearce, daughter of Ralph N. and Susan Rhoades Pearce. A Bradford High graduate who died in an automobile accident in November 2000, Pearce was a second year environmental science major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been recognized for her educational, athletic and musical talents.
The scholarship was endowed through restricted contributions to the Bradford Public Schools Foundation.
The award is given to students who exemplify human goodness, kindness and high moral character; a willingness to help others; enthusiasm for learning enhanced with extracurricular endeavor; financial responsibility; respect for school staff; and pursuit of secondary education.
Applicants must write a life experiences essay.
