LETTER: We heard from Kirk Johnson the other day about a letter he found in some family papers. It was a recounting of a story that Kirk grew up hearing from his grandmother and aunt.
It was so intriguing he shared it with us.
Kirk’s parents lived in Philadelphia at the time, and the letter was sent to them by his grandmother. Cheryl mentioned in the letter is Kirk’s aunt. The story comes from an incident over Oakwood Avenue in Bradford on April 2, 1967.
In a letter to Kirk’s parents, Evelyn Johnson detailed an encounter with what she described as a UFO — an encounter that three Bradford police officers responded to at the time, as well.
Johnson said in her letter, “Then after (my daughter) Cheryl and I took Charlie home, we had some excitement. You’ll never believe this, and I’m beginning to wonder about it myself, but three of us can’t be wrong.
“When Cheryl reached up to put the garage door down she kind of look up at the sky. She saw this bright light and called my attention to it.”
Initially, Evelyn brushed it off as an especially bright star. However, the “star” was glowing orange and moving toward the regional airport.
Then, Evelyn figured it must’ve been a plane… until the object went into reverse.
“Then it seemed to be coming closer toward us… I thought it might be someone on the hill with a light, but it kept getting closer and bigger, and then we could actually see the saucer shape, a real orangish glow and what seemed to be like windows.”
Frightened, the family members took off for their house.
“Cheryl ran in the den, turned out the light and looked out the window, and I looked out the back door window. It was still coming closer, and we ran up and called Dad (Evelyn’s husband, Ellsworth). I just told him I thought we were seeing a UFO,” the letter read.
Ellsworth immediately jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom window, was “shocked” and yelled “call the radio station.” He turned the bathroom light on to find his bathrobe so he could walk outside.
However, by the time he had gotten out to the porch, the object had disappeared into the night.
More to come.
