A Kane area student has completed the necessary requirements and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Cody B. Pontious, son of Michelle Pontious of Kane and Brian Pontious of St. Marys and grandson of Diana and Garey Wahlberg of Kane and Nardina Pontious of Johnsonburg, reached the milestone of Eagle Scout rank on Monday evening.
Pontious, a 16-year-old junior at the Kane Area School District, has been involved in scouting since joining Pack 422 as a Tiger Cub. He continued through Cub Scouting to achieve the highest award, the Arrow of Light.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Pontious coordinated a work crew of family, friends, neighbors, fellow Eagle Scouts and members of Troop 422 to build 19 ground level picnic table gravel beds at Twin Lakes Recreation of Wilcox.
Pontious demonstrated great leadership during his project, which required the commitment of over 531 hours for completion. The gravel beds were completed on Oct. 19, 2019.
Several Kane businesses donated to the project, including Dyne Excavating, Kane Hardwood, C.W. Hardware, Kane Lawn and Garden, Kane Eagles Post 307, and Kane VFW Post 1132.
As a member of Boy Scout Troop 422, Pontious has been in multiple leadership positions including Assistant Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and now Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. He has earned 33 merit badges and completed certification in CPR, Safety Afloat, Safe Swim Defense and BSA Lifeguarding.
According to Michelle Pontious, Cody Pontious “plans to continue being a member of Troop 422 by helping, leading and setting a good example for the younger scouts and the Kane Community.” Troop 422 is currently under the leadership of Scoutmaster Jon Blackmore, Committee Chairman Doug Walker and Assistant Scoutmaster Derrick Snyder.
Pontious will receive his Eagle Badge during his Court of Honor on a date yet to be determined.
