Wednesday’s windy weather may have contributed to two power outages that impacted local customers. Roughly 1,500 customers in the Bradford area found themselves without power for two different periods Wednesday.
Scanner reports had Bradford City Police responding to a transformer fire on Mill Street shortly before 2 p.m. Around the same time, calls came in to report a related power outage that reached into the downtown area and caused traffic lights to be out, among other concerns.
According to Penelec representative Tricia Ingraham, the outage impacted 2,153 customers in the area and was due to an equipment issue. While Ingraham acknowledged the gusty winds experienced in the area throughout the day, she noted that crews could not confirm that was the cause of the issue.
That outage was restored by 3:30 p.m.
Later Wednesday, Bradford City Volunteer Fire Department responded to reports of a tree on power lines on South Avenue at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The initial caller reported the tree was on fire, which was not confirmed as of press time.
Ingraham confirmed that 338 customers were affected by this second incident, which also led to an outage. She explained additional Penelec crews were needed to remove the tree and that customers were expected to have power restored by 9:30 p.m.
