Many experts recommend staying home as much as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, though many people may still have to go out to run basic errands such as purchasing groceries and getting the mail. Here are some ways, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to stay safe and healthy when leaving the house.
First and foremost, the CDC recommends staying home when experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, which include shortness of breath, fever and cough. Anyone who feels sick should call the doctor and follow the doctor’s guidance.
Shopping:
-Only visit a store in person for food and other household essentials if absolutely necessary.
-If at all possible, order food and other items for delivery or curbside pickup.
-While shopping or standing in line, make sure to stand at least six feet away from others.
-Shop during low traffic times, such as early in the morning or late at night.
-For anyone who is immunocompromised due to an underlying condition or is 65 or older, contact the store to see if they have special hours to shop.
-Disinfect the cart with wipes, if available.
-Do not touch one’s eyes, nose or mouth.
-Use touchless payment if possible. Anyone who has to use cash should use hand sanitizer after paying.
-After leaving the store, use hand sanitizer. When people arrive home, they should wash hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.
Accepting deliveries/mail:
-People should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer after getting the mail or receiving a delivery or takeout food.
Banking:
-Use online banking as much as possible.
-Anyone who does have to go to the bank should use the drive-thru ATM if available. Wipe the keypad off with disinfecting wipe before use and use hand sanitizer when done. When people get home or to a place with soap and water available, they should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.
Getting gasoline:
-If available, use disinfecting wipes on handles and buttons before you touch them. Use hand sanitizer afterwards and wash hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water as soon as possible.
Pharmacy:
-Try to order and pick up all prescriptions at the same time.
-Use the drive-thru, curbside services, mail-order or other delivery services when available.
-Talk to the doctor about the possibility of getting a larger supply of medications to avoid visiting the pharmacy as frequently.
