Penn State Extension is hosting a webinar series over the next several weeks to explore “Living on a Few Acres.”
Topics to be discussed include “Soils and Fertilizer,” “Vegetable Production,” “Fruit Production,” “Backyard Chickens,” “Beef, Sheep and Goats” and “Food Preservation.”
Living on a Few Acres is a seven-week webinar series for those who want to produce more of their own food on their property. This is an introductory course taught by Penn State Extension specialists and educators in their particular specialty area.
Webinars are live on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., and recordings will be available.
There is no cost for the webinars, but registration is required.
On April 28, in “Soils and Fertilizer,” participants will learn how soil relates to growth and production of vegetables and grasses, and the importance of soil sampling. Registration deadline is 6 p.m. on April 28.
May 5 will be “Vegetable Production,” where participants will learn how to grow vegetables at home. Registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. May 4.
On May 12 in “Fruit Production,” participants will learn how to successfully produce both small and tree fruit at home. Registration deadline is 6 p.m. May 12.
May 19 will be “Backyard Chickens,” which will include discussions on breed selection, feed, egg production, and lighting as well as what your township will allow in regards to keeping backyard chickens. Registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. May 18.
The May 26 webinar “Beef, Sheep and Goats” is designed for people who are interested in the fundamentals of starting a beef, sheep or goat enterprise. Registration deadline is 6 p.m. May 26.
On June 2, in “Food Preservation,” participants will learn about canning, freezing and drying as methods of home food preservation. Registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. June 1.
Finally, on June 9, in “Home Butchering,” participants will learn best practices and policies, food safety, animal handling, and dressing procedures. Registration deadline is 6 p.m. June 9.
