A Bradford man is facing criminal charges for two separate alleged incidents at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Richard E. Lewis, 45, of 127 Kennedy St., Apt. 1, was arraigned Saturday for both cases before District Judge William Todd. Lewis is charged in one case with terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor; and in the second case with resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a third-degree misdemeanor.
According to the criminal complaint in one case, at 1:23 p.m. Jan. 30, Bradford City Police were dispatched to BRMC for a report of a male being violent in the emergency room. The ER had to be put on lockdown because Lewis was allegedly yelling and being aggressive with staff.
Staff informed police that Lewis left the ER and was walking down the hall toward the same-day surgery area. Staff were following Lewis around the hospital, trying to calm him down, the complaint stated. While an officer was walking down the hall, he could hear yelling from around the corner. When Lewis came around the corner, the officer told him to stop.
Lewis, while pointing to the officer, said, “If you touch me you’re dead,” the complaint stated.
The officer grabbed Lewis by the shirt and took him to the ground. There, Lewis allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back, and other officers had to assist. While police escorted Lewis around the hospital, he made several threats to officers and staff, according to court records.
Then, at 9:01 a.m. Friday, police were called to the fifth floor of BRMC for a patient causing a disturbance. While a patient in the psychiatric unit, Lewis became violent toward staff and threatened to blow up the institution, according to court records. A staff member reported that Lewis had made the same threats on Thursday, too.
Officers were able to calm Lewis and give him medication, and he was warned against making more threats.
At 12:04 p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to BRMC again because Lewis was screaming that a medical provider “was dead,” which staff took as an implication that he would kill her, court records stated. Police were dispatched again at 2:39 p.m. that day for a report that told a registered nurse he would kill her while making shooting motions at her with his finger.
Lewis is incarcerated in McKean County Jail in lieu of $10,000, and preliminary hearings in both cases are set for April 22.
Lewis has a third active case involving an alleged incident at BRMC. In that case, he is facing aggravated assault charges for allegations that he was pushing a nurse, according to court records. In that case, he has a last-day-to-plea hearing set for May 7 in McKean County Court.
Also, in 2015, Lewis pleaded guilty to three terroristic threat cases that all involved BRMC, and in 2013, he pleaded guilty to charges of terroristic threats and simple assault for behavior against staff at Kane Community Hospital.
