RIDGWAY — An elk was killed when it was struck by a van at 4:34 a.m. Tuesday on Route 255 in Jay Township.
According to Ridgway-based state police, a van driven by Paul L. Joy, 44, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., was traveling north on Route 255, when an elk ran onto the highway. The van was unable to stop and struck the elk. The elk went to a field next to the road, where it died.
Joy was not hurt, but the van sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene, police said.
