As people across the world distance themselves — necessarily — to slow the spread of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, the list of out-of-the-house activities allowed has grown small.
For now, people can still enjoy a walk in nature. But walkers should still follow social distancing rules during their excursions.
“I know this is a very difficult time for us all,” said Carolyn Stroup, president of the Mount Jewett to Kinzua Bridge Trail Club. She added, “I am glad to hear that many of you are getting out on the Knox & Kane Rail Trail.”
The MJ2KB Trail Club act as stewards to the section of the Knox & Kane Rail Trail between Lantz Corners and Kinzua Bridge State Park.
Following the advice of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the club is posting signage by the trail with distancing tips for trail users.
Stroup shared a picture of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy sign that will be on display by the trail.
“Before you head out, check to ensure the trail is open,” the sign suggests. “Be prepared that trails may have limited services: facilities may be closed, and maintenance and security may be limited or unavailable.”
How can walkers/hikers/runners/bicyclists/equestrians keep their distance?
Recommendations include not gathering in groups; avoiding playgrounds; keeping six feet of space between people; carrying water, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes; not touching one’s face; washing/sanitizing hands regularly; and staying home for anyone who has symptoms of illness.

People will be able to access trails, forests, roads and parking areas in Pennsylvania state parks and forests, too, but the DCNR advises people to continue social distancing practices.
DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn explained in a press release, “This means we should spread out for outdoor activities — if you visit a public place and the parking lot or trailhead is crowded, try another spot, or head back to your neighborhood to take a walk if that’s possible.”
While open spaces are open, the DCNR has closed all facilities at state parks and forests, at least until April 30. Closed facilities include campgrounds, cabins, overnight accommodations, restrooms and visitor centers.
Similar restrictions are in place in the Allegheny National Forest and Allegany State Park.
Regarding the Knox & Kane Rail Trail, Stroup asked that users keep their dogs leashed due to the increase of both other trail users and porcupine sightings.
The MJ2KB Trail Club is also collecting membership payments.
“This money helps to keep the trail groomed and repairs and improvements made for everyone’s benefit,” she explained.
More about the club and the trail can be found at www.mj2kbtrail.club or on the club’s Facebook page.
“We appreciate everyone’s efforts to be safe and stay healthy,” said Stroup.
