During the COVID-19 crisis, people in the region have stepped forward to help those who are at-risk or are less fortunate.
According to Kane Mayor Brandy Schimp, “Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a volunteer group created in the Kane Borough to reach out and care for people in need specifically related to the coronavirus, COVID-19 emergency. This free service is offered by individual volunteers at their own expense.”
She explained steps have been taken to assure the safety of everyone involved.
“Volunteers have Pennsylvania State Police security clearances and have been given guidance to use recommended best practices for health and safety of both volunteers and persons in need,” Schimp said. “All client information will be private and confidential, and will not be shared outside of the organization. Neighbors Helping Neighbors promises to treat all persons equally regardless of race, creed or ethnic background.”
She explained what the group can help with, and what they cannot do to assist during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Neighbors Helping Neighbors can help you if you need help because of the COVID-19 Virus to shop for groceries, pick up prescriptions, go to the post office or bank, pick up food at the food pantry and phone homebound persons on a regular basis to check on their health and well-being,” Schimp said.
The group cannot help with long-standing or chronic problems unrelated to the current crisis; provide transportation to or from appointments of any type; provide financial assistance or pay for groceries or prescriptions or anything else; provide personal care for children or adults; or provide counseling or professional advice.
Anyone interested in the service should call the Rev. Rebecca Harris at at 814-598-6162.
Schimp reminded citizens that the Kane Food Pantry distribution will take place on Friday. “Please do not arrive early,” she said, explaining the wishes of the pantry workers. “Persons will receive preboxed items this month in order to get them through as quickly as possible.”
The mayor reminded the public that Gov. Tom Wolf’s closure order for schools has been extended until April 9 for students, “unless extending the closure is needed in response to the situation with the virus at that time. Please visit www.kasd.net for additional updates from the school district,” she said.
