The Winter Outings Series will continue with a free photography event in Potter County.
At 4:30 p.m. on March 14, Curt Weinhold, a professional photographer and PA Wilds Juried Artisan, will present Introduction to Night Sky Photography, a free two-hour program at the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum located midway between Galeton and Coudersport on U.S. Route 6 (GPS address: 5660 US Route 6, Ulysses, PA 16948).
“There is a big difference between taking photos in the daytime versus at night,” said Weinhold. “I will explain the basics of night sky photography from the equipment to the knowledge people need to get started. Discussed will be the type of camera, lenses and other specialty items people should have, as well as techniques, composition and the importance of editing.”
During his presentation, Weinhold will show a number of night sky photographs he has taken, mainly at Cherry Springs State Park, along with some at the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, near Wellsboro and other locations in the area.
“Cherry Springs State Park is an internationally recognized dark skies destination, due in large part to the legacy of the lumber industry ‘boom’ in this part of Pennsylvania at the turn of the 20th century,” said Weinhold, a Pennsylvania Lumber Museum Associates board member.
Well-versed in photographing the starry sky, Weinhold regularly offers a three-hour Nightscapes Photography Workshop at Cherry Springs for $60. To register online visit https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/cherry_springs_state_park.
Following Weinhold’s presentation, there will be an opportunity for participants to practice night sky photography on museum grounds, if weather permits.
Admission to the museum is free to those who attend this program; donations are appreciated. Preregistration is not required.
