WELLSBORO — Port Allegany couldn’t sustain late momentum in an 64-57 non-league loss to Wellsboro in overtime.
The Lady Gators (15-6) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force OT, but were outpaced in the extra period 11-4 en route to the loss.
To head coach Jamie Evens, though, the Lady Gators shouldn’t have needed overtime.
“Offensively, we struggled at the line,” Evens said, pointing to the Lady Gators’ 12-for-21 performance at the charity stripe. “We make a few of those, and we don’t even go to overtime, but it was a good game to get us ready for the playoffs.”
Those missed free throws were coupled with a 25-point night from Wellsboro’s (10-10) Cathryn Brought, who went 10-for-11 at the charity stripe.
“She had 18 in the first half. We knew coming in that she’d be tough, and we didn’t do a good job of staying on her,” Evens said. “She got to the line a good bit in the first half. We were able to slow her down a bit in the second half, but unfortunately they had other players step up.”
Indeed, Brought’s performance was bolstered by 11 points from Jordan Abernathy and 17 from Emma Coolidge.
Port A was paced by 27 points from Cailey Barnett, who added seven rebounds and four steals and hit a game-high four 3-pointers. Barnett has scored at least 20 points in four of Port A’s last five games.
Guard Bree Garzel added a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards to go with four assists.
